Which testosterone supplements actually work?

Some testosterone supplements have evidence, but the right one depends on why testosterone is low or less available. Tongkat ali and fenugreek may raise total testosterone in some men, while vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, boron, or DIM matter only when they match a specific deficiency, binding issue, conversion pattern, or metabolic problem.


Most “Testosterone Boosters” Start Too Late

Testosterone is not controlled by one switch. Your brain sends signals through the pituitary gland to the testes, testosterone is produced, and then some of it can be bound or converted before it reaches the tissues where it matters.

That creates several places where the pattern can change. Production may be low. Conversion may be high. Too much testosterone may be bound to SHBG, leaving free testosterone low even when the total number looks acceptable.

This is where supplement thinking often stops too early. A product labeled “testosterone support” does not tell you which part of that system it is actually addressing.

Tongkat Ali and Fenugreek Have Better Human Evidence

Among the herbs discussed in the video, tongkat ali has some of the stronger human evidence. A systematic review found increases in total testosterone, with the clearest effects in men who already had lower testosterone.

Fenugreek also has research showing an increase in total testosterone. Both appear to influence enzymes involved in how testosterone is converted, rather than simply forcing more production.

That distinction matters. If conversion is not where your problem sits, the same supplement may produce very little change.

The video also separates testosterone support from libido support. Tribulus, maca, and horny goat weed may affect libido, but the evidence does not show the same predictable testosterone increase.

Sometimes the Missing Piece Is Infrastructure

Vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium are different from the typical “booster.”

They are part of the environment required for normal hormone production and availability.

Vitamin D matters most when levels are actually low. Zinc is required for testosterone synthesis. Magnesium may influence how tightly testosterone binds to SHBG, which can affect how much free testosterone is available.

Other tools become relevant only in narrower patterns. Boron may make more sense when SHBG is elevated. DIM becomes a different conversation when estrogen metabolism and SHBG are both part of the picture.

As a functional medicine practitioner, that is the distinction I care about. A supplement can be well researched and still be the wrong tool for the pattern in front of you.

The Lab Pattern Should Come Before the Stack

A more useful starting point is understanding whether you are dealing with a production, conversion, or binding issue.

The video recommends looking beyond total testosterone alone. Free testosterone, SHBG, albumin, and estrogen markers help clarify what is happening. Vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, blood sugar markers, and stress physiology can add another layer when the pattern calls for it.

Blood sugar imbalance, body composition, sleep, and cortisol can all influence testosterone regulation. No supplement can fully compensate for those pressures if they remain the dominant constraint.

The useful question is not simply, “Which booster is strongest?”

It is: Which part of the testosterone system is actually under pressure, and does the supplement you are considering match it?
