The Hormone Effect Is More Specific Than the Headline

In one randomized controlled trial, healthy men ages 45 to 55 took purified shilajit for 90 days. Researchers found increases in total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHEA sulfate compared with placebo.
The important detail is that the brain’s hormone signals remained intact. That suggests shilajit may be supporting the environment needed for hormone production rather than simply forcing hormone output from the outside.
Energy and Hormone Production Share the Same Machinery
The energy and hormone claims are not really separate stories.
Shilajit contains compounds called dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, or DBPs, that are discussed in the video for their role in mitochondrial energy production. Mitochondria produce ATP, the usable energy your cells rely on for movement, cognition, immune activity, and hormone production.
Another trial found that men taking purified shilajit maintained muscle strength better after fatiguing exercise.
That fits the larger pattern: shilajit may help improve how efficiently the system produces and uses energy rather than acting like a stimulant.
In my own experience, the change was not dramatic or immediate. It was more noticeable as steadier afternoon energy, more consistent training output, and better recovery over time.
Your Baseline Determines How Much You Notice
This is where the thinking often stops too early.
The studies highlighted in the video were conducted in people who were otherwise reasonably healthy. That matters because mitochondrial output is influenced by sleep, blood sugar regulation, stress load, movement, and nutrient status.
If those foundations are already strained, shilajit may have much less room to express a noticeable benefit.
As a functional medicine practitioner, I would not interpret “I felt nothing” as proof that shilajit does not work. I would ask what else in the system may be limiting the response.
Product Quality Is Part of the Answer
Not all shilajit products are equivalent.
The video favors purified resin or a well-standardized product with meaningful fulvic acid and verified DBP content. It also raises a specific safety issue: raw shilajit can contain heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium.
