How do I know what methylene blue dose is right for me?
There isn’t one methylene blue dose that is right for everyone. The useful dose depends on route, timing, your mitochondrial and metabolic capacity, gut function, stress load, and how you respond. The video recommends thinking “start low and go slow” rather than treating a published range as a personal protocol.
The Number Alone Does Not Tell You Enough
One place the thinking around methylene blue stops too early is assuming that dosing can be reduced to body weight and a number.
Some ranges found online come from controlled medical settings using intravenous methylene blue. Applying those numbers directly to oral use changes the context completely.
Oral methylene blue has to move through the digestive system before being absorbed. Route, absorption, and the reason it is being used all influence what a dose actually means.
More Does Not Necessarily Produce More Benefit
Methylene blue is better understood in the video as an efficiency tool for mitochondrial energy production, not simply another source of energy.
That distinction matters because improving efficiency only helps if the underlying system has enough capacity to use the input.
The video uses the analogy of upgrading the wiring in a house. Better wiring can help, but it does not create more electricity if the supply coming into the house is limited.
This also helps explain why increasing the dose can sometimes make someone feel more anxious, agitated, or physically strained rather than more focused or energized. The relationship between dose and benefit is not necessarily linear.
Your Response May Tell You More Than the Dose
The script notes that many people using oral methylene blue for energy or cognitive purposes are working within relatively low-dose ranges, but it specifically does not present those numbers as a protocol.
What matters is what happens after the input is introduced.
If you feel nothing, the assumption is often that you need more. But the pathway methylene blue supports may simply not be the main limitation.
If you feel worse, increasing the amount to push through that response may add more strain.
If the response changes from day to day, that can also point toward differences in recovery, stress load, metabolic function, or underlying capacity.
As a functional medicine practitioner, I would treat those responses as information about the system, not simply feedback about whether the number needs to go up or down.
Timing and Readiness Belong in the Same Conversation
The video also points out that methylene blue can be activating and has a half-life of roughly five to seven hours, making timing relevant to sleep, heart rate, blood pressure, and exertion.
The more important observation is that dose selection cannot be separated from system readiness.
Before asking how much methylene blue your body needs, the useful question is whether your mitochondria, metabolism, gut function, recovery, and stress physiology are in a position to use that efficiency tool well.
That changes the dosing conversation from finding the “right number” to understanding what the number is being asked to work with.
