Why does methylene blue work for some people but not others?
Methylene blue can feel very different from one person to another because it does not create the same effect in every system. Its impact depends on mitochondrial capacity, oxidative stress, nervous system state, gut function, and whether the pathway it influences is actually limiting your energy. The response itself can be useful information.
The Same Supplement Is Entering a Different System
The usual question is whether methylene blue “works.” That question stops before the more useful part.
Two people can take the same compound and dose but start from very different internal conditions. One system may have enough stability and available resources to translate that input into clearer energy or sharper thinking. Another may already be strained or compensating, so the effect feels weak or inconsistent.
The difference is not necessarily the product. It can be the environment the product is entering.
Efficiency and Capacity Are Not the Same Thing
Methylene blue interacts with mitochondrial energy production, including the movement of electrons involved in making usable cellular energy.
But improving efficiency is different from increasing capacity.
Think of gears in a machine. You can help the existing gears turn more smoothly, but that does not solve the problem if there are too few gears or the rest of the system cannot support the workload.
Oxidative stress matters here too. The cellular environment has to manage the additional activity effectively. If that environment is already strained, changing energy flow may produce little benefit or an improvement that does not last.
Your Response Can Point in Different Directions
The video describes three common patterns.
A clear response, such as smoother energy or sharper thinking, may mean methylene blue is influencing a meaningful limitation and the system has enough capacity to use the input.
A minimal response may mean that mitochondrial efficiency is not the main thing restricting your energy.
A temporary response can suggest that the system can shift, but another constraint is limiting its ability to sustain that change.
As a functional medicine practitioner, I find those distinctions more useful than simply calling a supplement effective or ineffective.
The Rest of the System Still Has a Vote
Mitochondria do not operate separately from stress physiology, gut function, inflammation, nutrient absorption, or nervous system regulation.
That is why one compound rarely explains the whole outcome.

The goal is not to make methylene blue the answer. It is to interpret the response at the level where the rest of the pattern becomes visible.
