Why do my allergies flare even when triggers stay the same?

Your allergy triggers can stay the same while your response changes because the immune system’s tolerance to those triggers can shift. Ongoing stress load, disrupted cortisol signaling, changes in the gut microbiome, and weakened barrier function can all influence how strongly your immune system reacts, even when pollen, mold, or other exposures have not changed.


The Trigger Is Only One Part of the Picture

A common way of thinking about allergies is to focus almost entirely on the trigger. Pollen, mold, pet dander, grasses.

But that explanation stops a little early.

Two people can walk outside during the same pollen season, breathe the same air, and have completely different reactions. One feels fine. The other develops congestion, sneezing, pressure, or headaches.

The exposure matters, but so does the condition of the system responding to it.

Immune Tolerance Helps Explain the Difference

Your immune system is constantly exposed to things from the outside world through your nose, lungs, skin, and digestive tract. Most of the time, it samples those exposures and moves on without creating a major inflammatory response.

That restraint is called immune tolerance.

When tolerance shifts, something your body previously handled without much trouble can begin producing a stronger response. That can mean more histamine release, congestion, inflammation, or other allergy symptoms even though the trigger itself has not changed.

As a functional medicine practitioner, I find this distinction more useful than simply asking, “What am I allergic to?” The better question is often, “What changed in the systems regulating my response?”

Stress, the Gut, and Your Barriers All Matter

The video highlights several systems that can influence immune tolerance.

Chronic stress load is one. Stress is not limited to feeling emotionally overwhelmed. Poor sleep, blood sugar swings, inflammatory foods, environmental exposures, and ongoing psychological stress can all add to the amount your body has to adapt to.

The gut microbiome matters too because it is constantly communicating with the immune system and helping shape inflammatory responses.

Then there are the body’s protective barriers, including the digestive tract, respiratory tract, and skin. When those barriers are functioning well, they help regulate what comes into contact with immune cells.

These are not separate allergy problems. They are connected parts of the same response system.

Your Allergy “Bucket” Can Change Over Time

One way I explain this is with a bucket.

Poor sleep adds a little water. Ongoing stress adds more. Gut disruption, inflammation, and environmental exposures can add more still.

For a while, the body adapts. But as that bucket gets closer to full, the same pollen exposure that once caused a mild response may suddenly produce a much stronger one.

That does not mean pollen is irrelevant. It means focusing only on pollen may miss why your reaction changed in the first place.
